Lexia Needed for P0500 ABS sensor fault

Hi guys,
Im wondering if anyone that has Lexia close to Bolton can help out.

I took my car to national tyres when the ABS light came on, they told me the fault was rear left hand ABS sensor.
I got the sensor changed then a local garage plugged in with a snap-on scanner but fault code P0500 is the only info they can get.

Hoping someone close with Lexia could plug it in and let me know if the fault has changed or if its the same fault

This is a common misconception among many DIY car fixers. The P error codes do not always and quite often do not mean a faulty sensor.


While 'P0500' is indicated as a speed sensor fault (from the ABS wheel sensors on an ABS C3, gearbox sensor on a non ABS C3). It doesn't automatically say 'change the sensor because it is broken'. Although it may be broken, things like ABS sensors are exposed to brake dust, road grime and general dirt.

The ABS wheel sensor picks up a very small magnetic signal from the wheel bearing to determine if the wheel is turning and how quickly it is turning.


If the wheel doesn't turn when it should, if the sensor doesn't see the varying magnetic field when it should or the signal it sends to the ECUs is not as to be expected, a fault is flagged 'P0500' in this case.

What P0500 is saying, is 'go look at the wheel rotation sensors and the associated parts (wheel bearing magnetic ring)' and have a very good ponder at what you can see

This helps narrow down which wheel to remove, because it could be any 1 of 4. A time saver

That shouldn't be there, it is a build of of small ferrous dust that has aligned itself to and magnetically attached itself to the wheel bearing. It took 100,000 miles to get like that, quite a mess. I am not surprised it gave an error



Give it all a good clean up and you may return the ABS wheel speed sensor signal to what the ECU expects and clear the P0500 without even changing the sensor

Yep you are right m8, whipped off the drum this morning and it was totally covered in dust and small pices of metal.
cleaned it all out, slightly sanded the hole for the sensor to make sure of no rust in there.

put it all back and error gone, seemed the build up of crap on the ring was messing with the sensor, but at least i know theres a new sensor on there now
