Jacked the car up, undid the retaining bolt, disconnected the wiring connector and wiggled it off the locating lug.
It came out and went back in with very little difficulty at all.
Was that wrong (fears the worst)?

No problem. If it came off easily that was good. Mine was a lot more difficult and I couldn't remove the sensor without taking the TVD off to get to it.brimclell wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 5:19 amJacked the car up, undid the retaining bolt, disconnected the wiring connector and wiggled it off the locating lug.

They are slightly different engines so that would explain the difference in access I would imagine.

Sadly it was too wet last night to be taking too much of the engine apart but I got a friend to check the belt as I turned the engine over and there is definitely no evidence of damage to the belt at all.
We tried again with the easy start, got it to run for a few seconds and then it just died again. Still no change to the error code P0339.
One thing I haven't done yet is check the other end of the sensor cable - I can see it coming out of the sensor easily enough and then it seems to disappear up the back of the engine somewhere.
Does it go into some kind of multiplug somewhere?

Latest update:
Took advantage of a break in the weather to see whether I could get the car started.
Changed the camshaft sensor just in case but no difference.
Checked the voltage to the crank sensor and measured 5v. Is this ok or should it be 12v?
Took the timing belt cover off and checked the belt. All looks good and the timing marks all line up. I took a couple of photos showing the crank alignment hole, belt and reluctor ring and the arrow on the bottom of the crank gear pointing down at the mark on the crank case.
Should the notch on the reluctor ring match up to where the belt leaves the crank gear?
Working on the assumption that the timing alignment is fine what else could cause a single misfire, cause the engine to die and then prevent it from restarting?

Fully charged the battery for 24 hours, connected a booster pack and got a friend to squirt easy start into the air intake whilst turning it over.
It fired up, ran for a few seconds and then died again.
Could fuel or the injectors be the problem?

Your error code isn't injection.
The ECU will stop fuel being injected if there is a crank error to protect the engine from further damage.
So although it looks like an injection fault, that's because the ECU controls the injector firing.

Does your obd2 give live data for the crank signal?
If not, you may need lexia to see if it exists at the ECU and what the signal looks like.

Thanks Arfur.
I took the fuel lines off to check and when I turned the engine over fuel was coming out the green connector but nothing was coming out the white one.
Does that mean anything?
My fault code reader doesn't seem to display live data and I tried to install lexia on my old windows laptop but it didn't go well
and I never actually got it to run. It's a real faff to install.
I'll have another go with lexia and see how I get on.

Be very careful with cracking open the injector nuts. The fuel is at an extremely high pressure in the common rail that can be dangerous to people.
There are 3 connections to the injector.
One high pressure fuel supply from the common rail
One low pressure leak off back to the fuel tank
And one electrical connection to the injector from the engine ECU to open the solenoid that allows fuel to the cylinder.
