This C3 has a 12v power socket and the traditional cigarette lighter socket. These are used to power some plug-in universal USB adaptors.

This project is to upgrade these to something a bit more pleasant to see.

This is the finished job, you will need some of these usb adaptors if you want to follow the instructions below on how to fit them.

Take the keys out of the ignition and don't put them back in until you are ready to test your work at the end.

Pull off the gear knob and unclip the centre console
open the centre console
open the centre console
Disconnect the electric window plugs, power socket and cigarette lighter plugs.

The plugs have small barbs and need to be squeezed together to release the plug from its connection.
Remove the existing power socket and cigarette lighter

Remove the existing cigarette lighter and power socket (if fitted). You may destroy these while you remove them but they won't be used again, go for it :D
enlarge the existing hole

I used a new snap off bladed knife (available here). With a fresh blade it didn't take too much effort to whittle a larger opening. It doesn't need to be pretty because the shoulder of the new port is quite large.
It fits. Enlarge the hole with a sharp knife

note the polarity marking
note the polarity marking
Make a note of the marking on the base, the colour of the pins or make a mark so you can get the polarity correct. There is a small + and - imprinted in the plastic which is difficult to see when you are connecting it back up.
cut the cap off unless you want to keep it
cut the cap off unless you want to keep it
I cut the cap off and kept the washer to use. You could keep the cap or not even use the washer.

cut off the lobes from the locking ring to fit in the gap
cut off the lobes from the locking ring to fit in the gap
The locking ring has lobes to make it easier to tighten up. But the space is so tight that the lobes need to be cut off. I used a pair of side cutters to lop them off and trim any odd bits with the knife.
tighten the lock ring onto the washer (if used)
tighten the lock ring onto the washer (if used)
Tighten the lock ring onto the washer (if used) and make sure the socket is correct on the other side before a final tightening.

Make sure the keys are not in the ignition. Cut off the green/yellow and the other thick wire at the plug, strip and crimp the connectors to the thick wires. You are left with a thin wire still connected to the plug. Tape the plug and thin wire out of the way and insulated.

The crimping has to be done correctly and this topic has tips on crimping.

I have added red and black tape to make it easier to identify the correct polarity when connecting it up. Don't get it wrong. Green/Yellow to the side marked '-' and the other colour thick wire to '+'. The thin wire is not used (illumination).
carefully attach the plugs and pay attention to the polarity marked on the USB sockets

Do the same for the other socket if you want to.

Reassemble the centre console while fitting the electric window switch plug to the switch.

The finished job. Orange was chosen to match the other displays, available at aliexpress by clicking here but other styles and colours are also available here on eBay and here for something extra :)
