On a Citroen C3 2002 shape the steering would suddenly, without warning become very heavy.

This was due to the electronic power steering disengaging. It made manoeuvring and turning corners difficult because the force needed to turn the steering wheel was considerably more than it was when the power steering actually worked.

When driving on a straight road, the faulty power steering was less evident so it was difficult to know exactly when it stopped working.

The Fault
The fault would appear in less than 1Km of driving, the first time of the day. Pulling over (with difficulty) and switching off the engine/ignition didn't bring the electronic power steering (ePAS) back online

Disconnecting the car battery by detaching quick release live terminal clamp for 30 seconds would usually clear the fault and bring the ePAS back for the rest of the journey.

This could not continue :?

A reset of the ECUs indicates that the fault is not a bad ePAS motor or anything mechanical. More likely to be a poor signal to the ePAS ECU that is tucked behind the battery.

The Fix
The Citroen C3 Power Steering Fix was to disconnect the car battery and remove the electronic signals plug from the power steering ECU, give it a squirt of this contact cleaner/switch cleaner and reconnect it, then the battery.

Testing:
After many journeys it has become evident that the power steering fault has cleared 8-)

My assumption
I can only assume that the electronic power steering was getting a poor signal from the various sensors it connects to on that plug. Disconnecting and spraying (just for good measure) was enough to restore the good electrical signal that the ePAS ECU needed to run smoothly.
