You don't need to remove the whole units if you only need to change the number plate lamps (instructions)
The two number plate illumination units on the Citroen C3 2002 - 2009 are clipped to the tailgate and need to be released from behind the grey plastic internal boot cover.
Remove the grey plastic boot cover by levering the plastic away from the metal boot (more instructions here). There are no screws. There are only clips that release when pulled and refitted with a push.
You can then see part of the two number plate lamp units. The barbed clips are shown with a blue arrow in the picture. Release the barbs and the whole number plate lamp unit is released from the metal tailgate.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the lamp unit and it can now be removed and replaced with a new one.
