After getting home it was obvious that the rear arch space from the tyre was very small, it was very down on its suspension.
One of the springs had broken, causing the whole of the rear to sit low and cause a knocking sound from the rear that could be heard from inside the car. Handing didn't change, but there were no rear seat passengers and hardly any corners to negotiate.
Inspection shows confirms the diagnosis, broken rear spring.
Removal of the broken spring is very straight-forward. Because it is in two pieces there is no need for a spring compressor. Luckily the parts had found a way to stay attached to the car and I didn't leave bits of broken spring in the road

There are two rubber mounts that the spring sits on, replace if they are worn, but the lower one is not so easy to come by now.
New spring being fitted. The new spring needs compression to get it in the suspension mounts and removing the spring compressor was easier with the wheel on the ground.
Buy and fit springs in pairs, find them here, on eBay.
The opposite side wasn't snapped and needed a spring compression to remove, but fitting is the same.
