On a petrol engine the engine number is likely to be on the left hand side of the cylinder block. It will be stamped into the casting or on a metal plate attached to the casting. There are many variations of engine for the C3.
The engine number is also on the V5 document (UK)
If you are looking for the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), that's on the V5 and MOT certificate it can be seen through the windscreen in the bottom right corner.
There is also an ID plate on the body where the front passenger door almost meets the rear passenger door, just above the sill. You need to open the passenger door and look down at the sill and along to the back door.
And the VIN/chassis number is also etched into the bulkhead from the engine side.
Note the first and last characters of the etched VIN on the bulkhead are
in a 'O'
All these numbers should match each other, including all the paperwork.
The first 3 digits are VF7 which refer to Citroen as a manufacturer
Then the characters 4 to 8 are the Vehicle descriptor section (VDS) and this contains engine type.
The first two of the VDS (4&5) are 'FC' for hatchback and 'HB' for Pluriel
6,7 and 8 give the engine name as 3 letters
eg
8HY is a 16v diesel, 8HZ and 8HX are the 8v versions
KFV and KFW are the TU3JP
KFU is the 16v ET3J4
NFU is the TU5JP4 - 1.6L 16v
8FP/8FS is the 'Prince engine' EP3 1.4L
5FS/5FV/5FW are various 1.6L EP6 versions of the BMW/PAS prince engine.
THP is the EB2DT - 1200cc, 3 cylinder turbo with 12 valves
