The C3 self tests a number of functions as you turn the key in the ignition and this illuminating the dashboard lights to show that they work. The always work and these lamps never blow or go bad. Many of the pictures are thanks to one of our forum members 00James00 who undertook the investigation.

This post is about someone covering up a persistent fault on a C3 which involved the AIR BAG light.

When the C3 finds a problem with any part of the air bag system, it illuminates this light on the dashboard:
C3 AIR BAG fault warning on dashboard
C3 AIR BAG fault warning on dashboard
You should also see this illuminate briefly when the key is turned in the ignition as part of the self test procedure. Its the drivers responsibility to check the correct lights come on and go off when the key is turned.

It should be noted that if the AIR BAG light stays on, then the air bag system is inoperative and should be repaired before going back on the road. If the MOT tester does not see the AIR BAG light illuminate briefly or it stays lit, then this should be classed as a 'Fail'

With this C3 the AIR BAG light never came on and it was only a very recent purchase so the owner was not aware that anything was amiss with the warning lights. The image below shows both the 'knobbled' AIR BAG light and the second image shows a fully working C3 just as the key is turned in the ignition and the car doing its self test.

Bad:

Good:

(this has the AIR BAG symbol at test)

after a few seconds, the display settles down and you only get the warning lights that are relevant (door open, seatbelt, handbrake etc)

There should never be a time when AIR BAG does not illuminate briefly at ignition on, so this called for an investigation.

Removing the dashboard is relatively simple after un-clipping the plastic surround and removing 3 screws securing the unit to the car, the electrical connector can be removed. The following the tips in this section showing a disassembled dash display we used to inspect the AIR BAG light can help get the unit apart.

After close inspection some black tape was found to be covering the AIR BAG light
tape over the ABS LIGHT

arrowed is the tape obscuring the light for AIR BAG fault

with the tape removed the fault is now clear to see and would put off many buyers or at least lower the price significantly and cause the MOT tester to fail the car.
AIR BAG still illuminated after test indicates a fault
AIR BAG still illuminated after test indicates a fault
'AIR BAG' is displayed, when it should be off. This is the car saying there is a fault with the air bag system. The tool to diagnose these faults on both petrol and diesel of all years and models of the C3 is LEXIA and DIAGBOX tool.
