I own a 2002 C3 1.4I 8 VALVE. When I got the car it would idle unevenly almost to the point of stalling had no power and would cut out when slowing down at junctions, roundabouts, etc. After a lot of head scratching and many visits to forums and internet sites. I decided to do a compression test. Found to be ok. Decided to check the timing and found that the belt tensioner had failed. Put a new timing belt and kit on also replaced water pump. Problems solved.

Thanks for sharing the tip. I wouldn't have guessed it being the timing belt tensioner. Its good to hear the solution for these sorts of faults.

My first thoughts would have been coil pack and the air/fuel/ignition side.
