So I need to disconnect the battery first? How does one do that?
and I can't find anywhere to earth the sub - there are a few bolts nearby but they seem to already have yellow/green wires 'earthed' there. Can you earth more than one thing in that place?
You need to remove the front battery connector. Pull the red tab up and lift the connector off - no tools required.
The earth connection is best done inside the car, less likely to corrode. If you've found a place were other earth wires are connected then that's the place to go for, so long as your connector will physically fit with the others.
Don't forget, the wire from the battery needs to be connected inside the car before you make your connection under the bonnet.

My next issue - the way I connect them. In my pack, I received some 'U' shaped fixings to crimp onto the end of the wires. Think they are called fork connectors.
Can I use these to fix to the bolts, or do I need to get ring connectors?
Perhaps you could post a photo of where you are proposing to make your earth connections?
Forks will do the same job as rings, it just means you don't need to take a screw out completely to get the fork in. What you do need to do though is make sure there is a washer between the screw head and fork or you could put the fork under what ever's already connected to the screw. The metal on crimps is quite soft, when you re-tighten the screw the prongs of the fork can spread and come out from under the screw, especially at the side which is being pushed against by the screw turning. Rings do have a slight advantage but forks will be OK if you're careful.

I tried it. I presses the lever, and pushed down on the red thing to release the catch, the red thing came away, and the battery wobbled when the lever was pressed, but I cant seem to lift it out. Do I need to lift it out?
Don't attempt to take the fuse box out. It has various electronics on board which are best not disturbed.
The ideal tool would be a socket wrench with the correct size socket for the nut. You may be able to use a spanner of the correct size. Pliers will more likely end up damaging the nut and rounding the corners off.
