This C3 belongs to my granddaughter, she rang me when the car wouldn't start. I went along with my jump leads, got it started. She got home and the engine cut out whilst she was parking.
I had to jump start the car again, although I checked the battery and it was fully charged. So I suspected the alternator, so with the engine running disconnected the battery and the engine kept running, so as far as I can make out the alternator is also ok. I turned the engine off and tried again to restart, nothing but a click. Any ideas what to check next please. Appriciate any suggestions,

Thanks in advance.

Hi brigg, welcome to the forum.

Don't run the engine with the battery disconnected , that can cause damage to the alternator.

You test the alternator output with a volt meter on the battery.

How did you test the battery?

Some tests don't tell you as much as you think they do, particularly for engine starting power.

You have a bad battery (?)

or the battery supply lead to alternator or the battery to earth lead. Worth checking these visually.

Thank you for your welcome and answer to my question. I took the battery to be tested at a local Garage , and it is good.
The only reason that I disconnected the battery with the engine running was actually only seconds, to check the alternator, had the alt been at fault the engine would have stopped. It didn't stop so quickly reconnected the battery.
So I'm back to the start. Battery --Good Alternator ---Good. But engine will not turn over without using jump leads. If I turn the engine off again after starting with jump leads, Then turn the key to start again all I get is a click, as if the battery was down. OK a click points to starter motor, but I ruled that out because it turns over and starts easily with jump leads.
Confused to say the least.

Did you jump from donor battery -ve to recipient battery -ve or from donor battery -ve to a useful earth point in the engine bay on the recipient?
