500RPM does sound low for a tickover, 800RPM would be more like it, bag of nails would be about right.nikroc wrote:how high or low should the tickover on a 1.4 be?...car seems to be ticking over around 500rpm,doesnt show on cars tacho and sounds like a bag of nails..
I would think the low RPM at tickover is more of a symptom of the problem, rather than the problem itself. There is no idle screw adjustment, rather a computer controlled idle speed stepper motor (its on the throttle body).
Check for error codes with an OBD reader which may help identify if its a fuel injector fault or an ignition coil/plug fault, or something else.

I have a c3 in my local breakers so would the throttle body etc be specific to a 1.4 petrol??

I don't know for this one, it would depend on which tools you have and the 'know how' to separate them, they are listed as a unit, but everything can be disassembled, but is it worth it?nikroc wrote:just got back onto the forum...is the stepper motor integral to the throttle body or can it replaced individually?..
There are 2 distinct 1.4 petrol engines in the early C3, the 8 valve and the 16 valve. There are different, yet very close part numbers for the throttle body on the ones found on the 1.1 and the 1.4s, 1636.34, 1635.W2, 1635.P6, 1635.R8. I would imagine you can also find similar ones on small Peugeots etc.nikroc wrote:I have a c3 in my local breakers so would the throttle body etc be specific to a 1.4 petrol??
I have no idea what the differences in the part numbers actually mean. But I have seen single parts listed with many similar part numbers, so its not unusual for a part to have many similar part numbers.
