Hi C3 owners,
I have a 2003 1.4 petrol C3, 104,000 miles on the clock. Hoping someone might be able to help me.
For about a month I've been having problems with losing power in the car. I can be driving along and go to change down gear or stop at a junction etc and there is no power in the accelerator when I try to pull away, can hear a loud whirring noise (sorry not very technical - I can normally hear this noise change a couple of seconds before I try to pull away so I know it's going to happen). I can get to about 15 mph if I'm lucky. Turn the ignition off, wait a minute and back on again and away I go until the next time it happens.
Put the car on diagnostics at a garage and got the following codes:
P1161 - Manufacturer specific code
P1022 - Throttle/pedal position sensor/switch 'A' circuit
P1021 - Throttle/pedal position sensor switch 'A' circuit range/performance.
Was advised to replace throttle body - this was done at the Citroen dealership on Monday this week, no faults came up after this was done. On Tuesday I was stuck in traffic on a steep hill, went to pull away near the top and got nothing...other half had to get out and push. Was stuck in traffic on the A1 this afternoon, the road was down to one lane. This happened again just as the traffic was speeding up and had no choice but to drive to the next exit at 20mph, had nowhere to pull over to turn ignition off. Took the car back to Citroen yesterday, they assured me they could find nothing wrong, just advised me the car had excessively noisy tappets!?
Does anyone have any ideas? I love my little car and don't want to have to get rid but the bill at Citroen was £250 and we don't want to be shelling out more money only to find the problem's not fixed.
Any info greatly appreciated,
Thanks in advance,
Emma.

Hi emmsmcp
with,
I would double check the P1022 and P1021 are actually what you have and that the descriptions you gave match those codes.
The P codes you give don't match the descriptions.
with,
I think the correct advice would have been NOT to change the throttle body, as these descriptions indicate trouble with the accelerator pedal or the wiring from the pedal to the ECU.P1022 - Throttle/pedal position sensor/switch 'A' circuit
P1021 - Throttle/pedal position sensor switch 'A' circuit range/performance.
This indicates the diagnostic equipment isn't citroen friendly, the best diagnostics is done by a LexiaP1161 - Manufacturer specific code

If my memory is correct, this sounds very much like the fault with a connector block that carries the throttle pedal signals. The advice is to cut the connector off and solder the wires to each other. The connector is somewhere in the glovebox on a RHD car and doesn't appear on the LHD version.P1161 - Manufacturer specific code
There is some more information somewhere on this forum, I will have a look around and post a link.

The whole wiring from the throttle pedal is worth checking and cleaning the throttle pedal potentiometers will help track down the problem.

P1161 (Throttle Position Coherence) - throttle body.
P1161 (Throttle Position Coherence)
Oil changes, with the correct grade of oil should be carried out at the correct interval to avoid excessive engine wear.just advised me the car had excessively noisy tappets!?

Thanks so much for the reply.
Guess I should have done a bit more research before I trusted the Citroen dealership. Little bit peeved to say the least if the £250 bill was unnecessary.
The diagnostic kit was one that my brother in law owns - Citroen wanted £75 just to confirm the faults (I gave them the exact info I've put in my first post and they told me it was a replacement job).
So is this cutting the connector and soldering the wires relatively easy to do? I know a couple of people who might be able to help me, they know a bit about this sort of stuff, or is it a job for a garage?

Its a do it yourself job, if you have a fair bit of savvy with cars and electrics. Disconnect the battery safely (see here), cut and rejoin one wire at a timeSo is this cutting the connector and soldering the wires relatively easy to do? I also put a recon: throttle body on but still same, so I have a new app coming , best to go eBay £45 Amazon want £70 you won't get one from Europeans , halfords, etc ,emmsmcp wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2013 5:11 pm Hi C3 owners,
