I seem to now have a drip on the drive, having a look underneath it seems to come from the sump area.

Checked the drain and seems clean enough but seems to be oil around this bracket, in between the brackets and the sump. Is this a suspension brackets that could have pulled away from the sump as the exhaust bracket seems to have broken. Don’t think this is a recent break, only had the car since Jan this year (already had to replace the cam belt and ECU and injector!). It was noted on a previous MOT that an engine mount needed replacing. Any ideas if a leak from this point is likely as described or likely to come from somewhere else? Not got ramps so difficult to get under to see.

Hello Raggy

I have not seen this contraption welded to the sump before. It looks badly welded because of the rust. This could be your leak.

The standard engines fitted to the C3 you have listed as your car don't have this extra thing. Nothing shows in the diagrams I have, no part number.

Can you PM or reply with the VIN so I can see if it's some special factory mod? It doesn't look very professional though :(

Is there any history with this car?

It all looks very perplexing.

The C3 Sump often looks like this across most of the engines the sump is very similar, engine mount locations etc.

Hi, I have PM’d you the details, not sure if you have got it as it seems stuck in the Outbox and not in Sent Items?

Yes, I got the PM, thanks.
TU3A engine and a BVM5 gearbox, very standard stuff for the C3.
14" steel wheels with no bells or whistles, a base model.

The VIN doesn't come up as anything special and there is no mention of that welded on bracket on the sump.

The extra welds, the bracket and the mount should not be fitted to this engine.

I suggest you take it to a Citroen main dealer to ask them what they think has happened.

It looks like a right mess, someone has bodged it for a reason and now it leaks :(

You will be looking at fitting a new sump and replacing any other missing parts and making good all the other damage in there. It's not a pretty picture.

Your sump should look just like the one in my photo :o

Thanks for that, so good news and bad news. Good news the PM arrived, bad news, it’s just another thing on this car that’s going to cost me....again. Thanks for the advice. I will take it to my normal garage first to have a look to see if they can do anything before I venture near a main dealer. Yes it is a base model (says it’s a ‘Cool’ but at this point not sure what’s cool about it!), body and interior are in good condition but I seem to be beset by mechanical and electrical issues.

Hello Raggy. It looks as if someone has 'got at it' the extra part added is not standard or a Citroen modification.

If one part is 'got at' , expect others. It sounds like you have found some already :(

My worry would be that three are other modifications that affect the safety aspect.

It may just be an engine swap. The TU3 is fitted to other makes and many different years. The mounting points may differ slightly from different makes and years while the engine swapper may just have done enough to make the engine fit :x

I have your VIN and I will find a diagram to locate the engine number stamped on the actual engine block. This will prove if the engine is different to the Citroen fitted one and may even identify its source.

Doing a look around I found this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-C3-2002-2010-1-4L-PETROL-ENGINE-SUMP-STEEL-PAN-INC-BRACKET/372582695243
Lists it as fitting a 2007 C3 1.4
Quite a number of others list that sump so may well be a standard part.

You may well need that engine mount that is covered in oil too :D

The ebay listing doen't say it fits your car, but you could well have the wrong engine in there?

If you can find the engine number on the front of the block, that would help but it is not an easy find.

Ok, I will have a look at the weekend. Any clues where on front of engine it may be.
