Hello, i have a 2004(54) 1.4 C3 Auto with 32k miles and over the last few days has been making a strange noise from the off side of the engine it went away for a day but today after 30 miles of driving it returned with a vengeance. Pulled over and popped the bonnet and while looking i saw water escaping from the waterpump area and have since had it recovered. Is this a water pump failure and if so what will the costs of having it fixed at a garage be? I also presume the belt will need replacing too.

Thanks.

Hi Dabura.

The water pump is an unusual failure. You will need to have a mechanic take the cam belt cover off to have a look for evidence of a leak and see what caused it.

If you want a price for the water pump, have a look here. The garage will give you a price for fitting a water pump, its going to be similar to a timing belt because the belt will have to come off. Its over 10 years old and its been contaminated with coolant, so you will be well advised to change the cam belt, the tensioner and the idler at the same time. There may be other parts that have been damaged by the leak and these may need to be repaired or replaced too.

Thanks for the link. Yes the water pump seems like it shouldnt of fail at such a low mileage but the noise was coming from that side of the engine and i saw it burst from the area i belive the pump to be, hopefully get it booked into a garage tomorrow and hope for the best. Any idea what else the issue could of been the noise was gravely as opposed to grindy and was not directly effected by RPM. Before today the noise would completely dissapear in "3rd"(auto).

The water pump, TVD, idler, tensioner, alternator and air con pump are all engine related speeds. You are left with road wheel and drive shaft on that side that are road speed related.
