just thought I would update and let anyone who searches and finds this topic in the future know, problem is fixed.
the injector was at fault, it was leaking fuel. (first post I suggested cylinder 1 in opening post but I got mixed up with cylinders, it was in fact cylinder 4 that failed.
in my first post I questioned whether it could just be the o-rings... from what I learnt with all my google searching this is impossible - fuel would leak externally if the top o ring failed and as I learnt, vacuum leaks would be apparent if the bottom o ring failed. this is caused by an injector that has failed.
replaced the injector on cyl 4 with OEM one from euro car parts for about £60 I think.
Also ended up having to grab some O-rings from Citroen because some that I ordered from eBay were wrong and didn't have time to keep trial and error. I'm sure some are out there on eBay for far cheaper. and ill be searching for some as I only replaced one that was torn. but the others looked a little suspect and will need changing eventually.
I paid £20 for 1 set of o-rings top and bottom from Citroen dealer!!!!!! even the Citroen guys were shocked at the price.
