Appologies for only logging on with a fault ..... it's been 12 months since my last confession .... err fault
Do we have a 'how to do' here? EmilysMum's C3 (60 plate 1600 petrol) went for a service recently, & an advisory was an iffy aux belt. So, having changed many fan belts in my time I bought one from Citroen t fit myself ..... how hard could it be?
Wheel off, arch liner out, 30mm spanner on the tensioner, levered it towards me, engaged the pin to leave the belt slack. BUT, no way was the belt coming off the crank pulley as another idler pulley was hard against ..... driving the power steering? Anyway, removed the crank pulley, removed belt, replaced it with new belt & struggled to fit belt as it was slightly thicker than the old one. Succeeded in the end, started engine & left it idling but then rapidly switched it off as black smoke started pouring from the belt.
Refitted old cracked belt. :?

Welcome back :D

Not too bad, its a tight squeeze. Some have auto tensioners and very early have a fixed tensioner. Its definitely not a fan belt ;)
EmilysDad wrote:driving the power steering?
No, the power steering is electric. No PAS pump there.

There are the A/C compressor, idler, alternator, crankshaft and the automatic tensioner pulleys.

It sounds like the belt was trying to turn against a seized bearing in a pulley.
EmilysDad wrote:Refitted old cracked belt.
If it ran with the old belt, it would suggest you have the wrong belt, there are more than one for the same year.

 The waterpump is driven by the cam belt.

Thanks for the reply C3Driver
The tensioner is obviously auto & released via the 30mm 'nut' on it ..... lever it towards you and stick the fitted spring loaded pin in to keep it levered back. Removing the tension was easy, it was making the crank pulley let go of the belt, I removed the 3 bolts from the pulley to remove it and the belt.

Looking at the crank pulley end of the engine with the arch cover removed, alternator top right-ish, the tensioner is top right (via the 30mm spanner, to the right of the crank pulley is the aircon compressor, to the left is an idler that pressed against the back of the polly V belt and AN Other something to the left that was driven by the idler.

Electric Power steering ....... Yes, I thought that later

The belt came from Citroen. The only obvious difference was that it seemed a little thicker that than the one I removed.

It does seem that something is seized, but was all OK before I touched it

Why isn't the heater getting hot? Why is the high temp warning light on?
The engine IS overheating as it spewed coolant over the inner wing. (Unlike when the temp sensor failed & the engine thought it was overheating)

Anyway, I A framed it to my local Citroen dealer with the instructions 'to mend it' ......

At least I fitted the bolt on exhaust hanger in lieu of the original hanger that I've had re-welded on a couple of times :D

Spoke to Citroen today. Apparently there's some fancy electrickery motorised set up to drive the water pump which is NOT cam belt or 'fan belt' driven.
He couldn't give me a price as the system was down, but it'll be £hundreds. Who knew fitted a fan belt could be so complex & expensive :-(

:o :o :o

I misread (neglected to check) that yours is the 16v 2010 with a 'BMW' 'Prince' engine

It has 'a double overhead 16 valve camshaft, on demand oil and water pumps'

so, 'electrickery motorised set up' is the best way to describe what you have.

I will pay more attention next time......

Yes, I believe it is a BMW lump. It also has the world's most expensive thermostat, electrickery is used again. It's a motorised, ECU controlled valve instead of a usual waxstat. £165 fitted.

So ..... damaged water pump friction wheel (no 5)
Replaced water pump pulley (no 3) & belt

£317.05 please ..... :(

The invoice says there was part of belt stuck in the electronic tensioner :? Not sure where that was from as though the belt I put on over heated & melted to the friction wheel, it's all intact. Anyway, lesson learned is to never ever lift the bonnet on this car again ...... I've never liked it!
