Hi massod,

For an early petrol citroen C3, use a fully or semi synthetic 10w40 engine oil like the Total Quartz 7000 10w40 5 Litres available here. This is the oil specified by Citroen for the engine fitted to your car.

Total 7000 is the engine oil for a Citroen C3 petrol from 2002

If your gear selector stick looks like this:

(or has the letters P R N D on the gear selector)

Then use this Automatic Gearbox oil (click here) (oil is Esso ATF 4HP20-AL4 or Esso LT 71141 (mobil ATF 4HP20-AL4 or mobil LT 71141) for the AL4/20TP75 Transmissions.

But,

If your gear selector looks like this:

(or you have 'flappy paddles')

Then use this manual gear oil - Total Gear 8 75W80 (also for flappy paddle/sensodrive) for the gearbox, expect to use up to 2L to refill an empty gearbox. Note Total Gear 8 75W80 now supersedes the Total Transmission Bv 75W-80 previously specified.

Hope that helps!

Hi soewhaty, transmission oil is for the life of the car, but you can save some problems by changing it every so often, say every 100 000 miles? But usually its changed when drive shafts are changed or the drive shaft oil seals are done when it makes sense to do it.

Engine oil has a much more defined schedule and that is every 20 000 miles for normal driving down to 12 500 miles for 'severe' (like school runs and mostly short journeys). Haynes suggest every 10K miles or at least once a year. This is because more frequent oil changes don't do any harm to the car but skipped or stretched servicing causes increased wear.

You must also change the oil filter at the same time. Click HERE and enter your reg to find the right oil filter for your engine and get a discount when you use the code C3OWNER at the checkout ;)

The engine oil specified for a petrol is the Total 7000 (here).

Thanks for the help! The original post is for an automatic gearbox and I'm on a manual one. Does that make any difference as to which type of oil I should put in my c3?

I see you suggest to the OP this one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Total-Quartz-7 ... troenc3-21

and to me this one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Total-Quartz-1 ... 96cd8e9767

Are they the same? Look the same, but ... anyway, just wanted to know if there's a difference between manual and auto when it comes to the engine oil.

Makes no difference, they are not connected in any way.

Both the links are to the same oil, the sort of oil for a Petrol C3 and some of the Diesels.

Thank you! Does the brand matter? I mean, is the c3 designed to run specifically on 'Total'?

Also, I was told that 5W 40 and 15W 40 are also possible options to use depending on the density, viscosity needed and the weather conditions hot/cold. Or should I just stick to 10W40 all year round?

10W40 is the UK range, other climates use different viscosity oils.

Are you in the UK, if no, where in the world are you.

No one changes oil for the seasons in the UK, hey, they don't even change tyres!

Total oil linked to above is the correct oil and covers the correct specifications for wear and contamination other than just the viscosity. The total 7000 and 9000 are easy to get and are correct, if you change brand you will need to check it meets the same (or greater) AECA grade sequences to be within the specification given by Citroen.

If your oil doesn't meet the grade, expect to do more frequent oil changes.

I'll be driving the car mainly in northern Italy, Milan. So, still 10w40 or? The current oil is 5w40 so I don't know if I should ask them to put 10w40.

What are the Citroen AECA grade sequences so I can check them and be aware of what oil to use if I can't find the prescribed one? Thank you in advance! :)
