Hello,

I own a Citroen C3 2005, 1.4L Petrol. Now for two years straight it has given me nothing but problems, and this time I've been faced with quite a curious one but not uncommon.

I'm driving it on my way to school, and suddenly the temperature gauge jumps from a normal 3 Bar, to 6 Bar. Now obviously I've stopped let it cool and proceed, From now, i've started using my heater to dispense some heat from the engine, and as long as the car is moving, it wont overheat (80-90c). Traffic is where this happens usually (even with the heater on). me being curious i also started running some tests after a couple day with the use of my OBD and started looking at my coolant temps. At around 97/98 the temperature gauge jumps to full (6 Bars) from being normal. Now to my knowledge, around this temp is when the coolant fan should start to kick in, And it doesn't. now in an attempt to fix this issue, we replaced the temperature sensor (the one located exactly next to the engine head). I've also tested the fan by running the AC, and still nothing happens. 97/98c should certainly not show full temp, but it still does. The engine has water and oil. and i am unsure what to do next. I was thinking of running 12V to the fan. but have no idea how as well as i can't find anyone doing the same thing with the car. If anyone can help me save a buck, that would be appreciated!

Hi

Make sure you don't have 2 engine temperature sensors, on some engines one does the dashboard and one does the fan - via the engine ECU.

There are several different fan configurations on the C3 models all depending on spec. So you would need to identify the fan to be able to test it. But you can try turning it by hand with the engine off :o and it may not even turn, that would prove it is faulty.

You could remove it and inspect it, look at the brushes and if they are low, you will be changing it anyway.

Some have a relay, that can be investigated and tested easily, others don't have the relay.

What is the VIN number? It may help identify the fan configuration you have?

Hello, Cheers for the reply.

In my country, we do not use VINS, therefore it's hard for me to tell you. Also, I've tried turning the fan by hand, and it turns. as far as I know, I've also tried to apply some voltage to the relay and blew the main fuse. (fixed that) - I'm not sure if my engine has 2 temperature sensors, but I left it for my mechanic to see, and he's suspecting we'll need to visit an electrician. Either way, I will be getting rid of the car, since I've not completely given up on it.

It appears on the windscreen, if there is no VIN number how do you uniquely identify each vehicle?

Recalls, parts and ownership all rely on a VIN or an equivalent.

See C3 engine name, dataplate and VIN location

Maybe worth checking with OBD scanner for fault codes?

If it gives you a P0598 error code ( Controlled Thermostat Signal short circuit to earth or open circuit ) it means your thermostat needs replacement.

Since you replaced the temperature sensor which did not solve it, this might be a good option, but make sure to check error codes first tough.
