It never rains but it pours :-(

Resolved one problem to then get another with coolant loss

My daughter has had this 1.4 petrol C3 for a couple of months and apart from the starting problem (now resolved) its been running fine

She does mostly local trips of only a few miles, every week or two a 30 mile round trip to nearest town, then occasional trips to visit family of a 320 mile round trip, and its been fine until a few days ago when about 10 miles from home the temp light came on with a stop car warning on the central console

She pulled over immediately and let it cool down, then opened the coolant cap to find no coolant visible, she then called me, I took plenty of water but on checking around the engine bay and underneath, found nothing amiss, so added some water, it only required under about half a litre or so to bring up the level, checked the dipstick, no sign of water droplets in the oil, nothing else obvious so just assumed it was a lack of top up, the reservoir was dirty and it looked like it was between the min - max level until you cleaned it, daughter said she had checked and thought it was okay without removing the cap , so off she went and all was well it seemed

Three days later and she was going to do a 160 round trip to visit her sister yesterday, she checked the levels to find the coolant gone again, at least the level was down to the bottom of the reservoir

No sign of water loss anywhere obvious, no obvious water droplets in the oil (which might have suggested a head gasket)

Googling and checking the forum archives found confusing results

Can anyone suggest any reason for the water loss

Are there known problems of water loss with the 1.4 C3 ?

The petrol 1.4 can suffer headgasket fail and leak coolant into the cylinders. You can test for combustion gasses in the coolant with this kit from eBay (click here).

The coolant should be a nice pink colour. If its brown or blue you have a problem.

A tiny pin prick of a hole can loose coolant which evaporates away. It only leaks when the system is hot and up to pressure. You could have a leak on a coolant hose.

Thanks for your feedback

Thanks also for the link to the kit on ebay, apart from the wait for it I suspect the garage test wouldn't be far different
Just waiting for him to be free to talk to

When I got there the reservoir was empty, the reservoir was tinted pinkish, but no fluid in to see what colour it was, I just topped it up with water

It didn't take much to top it up but any coolant loss is a worry

I did/am considering the pin prick theory but so far nothing seen or noticeable, its rather congested in the engine bay so quite hard to tell for sure, only a pressure check is likely to find it

I was going to check each spark plug in turn but it seems a right palaver getting at them, am I right in that or is it easier than I suspect?

Well I had a further look at her C3 this morning, ran it up to warm, no obvious sign of a leak anywhere, but there is the tell tale white exhaust which suggests to me its probably a head gasket

Does anyone have any idea of the book time or overall cost (I know labour per hour will vary enormously) for replacing a head gasket on a 1.4 petrol C3 2006

Unfortunately our usual mechanic is in hospital for a couple of days so can't look at it until next week

This topic for the C3 head gasket mention £1000 €1000 including the cam belt
petrol-citroen-c3/head-gasket-blown-on- ... -t876.html
But that does sound excessive. Doing the cam belt as a full kit is a good idea while you have the engine in bits anyway.

Then there is always this magic head gasket sealer (ebay). I have never used it and don't know of anyone who has so I can't say anything about it.

Reviews on Amazon for the magic head gasket sealer (click here) show an almost 50:50 split for 'it did work' and 'it didn't work'. Looks like a toss of a coin if its going to work and if it doesn't there is a big clean up job to remove the stuff.

The closest to the C3 is the C4 review

Great, fixed the problem

Tried this on a 'leaky' Citroen C4 engine with no obvious external leaks(opinion being the leak was internal. Followed the instructions one cold Sat afternoon, lots of steam pouring out the exhaust. No steam coming out of the exhaust now even on the coldest days, no more warning lights and messages referring to low coolant. It seems to have worked very well, saved a few hundred quid for a head gasket job - so far.

Thanks again for the feedback, not liking the sound of the cost of the job though, I hope thats main dealer with their exorbitant charges (I worked for a main dealer for nearly 20 years so know whats what ;-)

The head gasket sealer sounds as reliable as the old piston seal if you remember that one, that never worked to the best of my knowledge and as you say causes a huge amount of clean up work

Her car is about 49k mileage now and ten years old, so I gather its due a cam belt anyway so that would be done at the same time

If I had a garage still I would do it myself but thats not really practical on the side of the road

Looks like I may have to wait for my mechanic to be available

Many thanks for the advice, it is appreciated

I thought I would leave some information on the outcome of the coolant loss & over heating problem

For the head gasket job I was quoted by the main dealer £90 plus vat just to inspect and advise if the head gasket was required (I didn't bother to go further with them as clearly they were going to be a lot more than anyone else and they were far from helpful, requiring three enquiries before I got any response at all)

Another local garage quoted circa £400 to include head set and bolts, skim of head and new cam belt

Thankfully my mechanic became available, initial quote £250/260 including head skim, head set and bolts etc

Additionally a new cam belt for which we were advised to also change the water pump and pulley at the same time added to the bill

So the total bill came to £366

A quote for just the cam belt change varied from £180 to £205, and as it was needed after ten years, I guess the overall bill wasn't so bad taking that into account

Thanks for the update. Not bad considering all the work that was done.
