HA, HA, HA!!
I have a saying in these situations: "First the gunpowder, then the wadding". My family know what I'm talking about but everyone else thinks I'm crazy.
It goes back to this cartoon I remember from my childhood but it has stuck with me all my life.

The point is; we get so fixated on one thing that we cant see the obvious answer and boy, have we all done that in our life!
I repair aircraft components, inspection by a second pair of eyes is mandated for just this reason!!

P.s I'm wondering how to get the blue gear knob loose on mine, it feels glued on, any ideas or shall I start a new post?
I think this thread is finished.
I also think your problem with the gear selector might effect other people, so documenting your findings would be helpful.
The knob should just pull off. They can be
very tight. On the other hand it's possible it has been glued in but give a good yank first.
