The point is; we get so fixated on one thing that we cant see the obvious answer and boy, have we all done that in our life!
I repair aircraft components, inspection by a second pair of eyes is mandated for just this reason!!

I also think your problem with the gear selector might effect other people, so documenting your findings would be helpful.
The knob should just pull off. They can be very tight. On the other hand it's possible it has been glued in but give a good yank first.
