The thing that sets the alignment of the belt on the teeth is the crankshaft pulley. The flanges on either end hold the belt in place. The pulley isn't loose is it?

Another wild guess might be the stud that the adjuster runs on is bent? Water pump is seated properly?

hi all, update...,
changed the tensioner over to T.2 which sorted the belt walk, drove it over to uckfield citroen this morning as problem still persisting, however 1st and 2nd gears are slow to start, lacking a lot of power but 3rd,4th, 5th and reverse are all fine!!! weird eh. got some pictures to follow when I get the chance.
I'll keep you posted.
cheers

So you have 3 tensioners?
The original and two new ones. The first of the new tensioners caused the belt to run off the cam pulley but the original and the second new tensioners are fine?
Well there's a trap for the unwary. That's one thing we have learned out of all this.
Did the belt show signs of moving after turning the engine over the 4 times? If not, would you recommend turning the engine over after setting the tension to check belt alignment? Could you guess how many revolutions it might take to check alignment?
What do you think is wrong with the faulty tensioner?

Looking forward to see what Citroen have to say.

when i removed the original tensioner i replaced it with T1 after fitting and refitting and adjusting and tightening and over tightening i think i must of damaged which is when it started to walk, i then replaced the stud and put the new tensioner on and it sorted it, so i thought it might’ve just been the stud but nope it was me going to town on T1 :)

this is looking from wheel arch through a small gap to where the flywheel hole is and you can actually see the notch in the flywheel, i shined a torch on the area then peered through the gap just under the aux tensioner and there she blew! still didn’t help sort the car but at least i knew it was right in the middle...

Yes, that second tensioner is not right.

What diameter is the pin that you are inserting into that notch? 6mm?
The notch looks smaller than that, or is it just an optical illusion?

Get a load of this.

I have started changing the cam belt on the second C3.
I pinned the flywheel at the correct point and look where the cam sprocket is sitting.
This guy was not running very well and I found the purge valve stuck open. I don't think this was helping much but I still don't think this was the root cause, still sticking with the purge valve.
I still have a way to go to get him running again but I'm glad I have pulled everything apart and started from scratch.

That's quite a distance,
So update...
I took her to Wilmots citroen and they said...they couldn't do the timing till they'd done the control lever as it wouldn't go into 1st or 2nd... :o  so the timing was absolutely fine, when I tested her the first time and drove forward I remember just as I was engaging first the lever lost its spring so it was flopping around all over the place, had this problem with an Alfa 147, I never knew I wasn't in first gear so be warned, I can't believe I didn't even think of investigating it, I was so sure I'd messed up the timing. What a plonker Rodney.
So now I'm going to take the unit out and see if I can fix it or have been looking online, someone mentioned putting a 207 gt control lever in a c2 so just seeing what I find...
That is for all your inputs...
P.s I'm wondering how to get the blue gear knob loose on mine, it feels glued on, any ideas or shall I start a new post?
