Hi all newby here. I run a 2010 C3 1.4 petrol 16v mileage 78000. Can anyone advise as to how the alternator belt tensioner works, i.e is it electrical or engine pulley powered. My problem started last night, it has shredded 3/4 qtrs. of the belt off the pulley which in turn has stopped the water pump turning which caused the high engine temperature light to come on and also the stop light. I stopped almost immediately to investigate. To my horror all the engine coolant had leaked/disappeared. Had to wait 45 mins to be recovered by rescue truck to home. Has anyone any idea how the tensioner works or suffered the same problem. Any pictures or diagrammes would be appreciated of how it should sit in place correctly. Needless to say it is now in the hands of a Peugeot/citreon mechanic. Hopefully someone can help.

Cheers in anticipation...….hunter

I don't know what engine you have in there, if it's one of those BMW ones, its got an on-demand electronic water pump.

If you PM me your VIN, I can look up the engine for you and give us a bit more to go on :)

You have an EP type engine which is the 'Prince' BMW engine found in later models.

Yours is the EP3C

so this should be your alternator belt and its tensioner.

You may have a seized bearing in the roller that is on the end of PART 2 to shred that belt?

This is the water pump for that engine

5 is the FRICTION WHEEL

3 is WATER PUMP PULLEY

1 is the WATER PUMP

This is what part 5 - the friction wheel looks like

Here it is in a youtube :)
