2005 1.4 16v sensitive rattle under load but not at idle?

Hi, 1st post.

My 2005 XTR has developed a rattling noise under load that is not there at idle or when the engine is revved when stationary.
It had new valves, guides and cam belt kit including water pump fitted 20,000 miles ago and has ran really well until the last 6 months.
It sounds like pinking and appears down slightly on power although it returns 40 - 45 mph going work and back each day around 20 miles in total.
No fault codes detected, plugs look clean but it does use a pint of oil every couple of thousand miles.
No smoke from exhaust and some times it runs with only light rattling sound under heavy load.
Any ideas?

A pint of oil every couple of thousand miles is excessive.

This can be due to using the wrong grade of oil or a seriously worn out engine. Maybe that is why you have a rattle?
