Hi all,

I've had this happen a few times on me now,
The battery is fine, it had a new starter motor a when we got got the car a year ago. Can bump start fine and runs good but, will not turn over. No clicking from starter solenoid, do dimming of instrument cluster, not that I have noticed it do it normally. But some older cars do this. Help, need to get to work tomorrow and my GF needs to be in hospital tomorrow too!

It's a 52 plate 1.4 HDI 16V

Are there any wire diagrams or location of fuses for the starer motor circuit on here? Just had a look at this but couldn't see the starter motor fuse (BSM)

Many thanks,

Adam

P.S
I didn't want to post on treehack's posting with "Oh year my car dose that too!"

Hi Adam

There is no fuse for the starter and solenoid on the C3. Which is why the solenoid/starter motor is the prime suspect after the battery/battery connection for one that won't turn over.

The solenoid can be repaired and there are some pictures and words on the subject here, thanks to RC3D :)

Thanks C3CAR.

If I can replace the solenoid and brushes with out removing the SM I'll just get the parts, but if I have to remove the SM to do this I will just buy a new unit.
I'm so tempted to get the garage to do this, it's in such an annoying place and my back would hate me for days...

Cheers,

Adam

I don't think you will be able to get the solenoid separated from the starter without removing the starter and solenoid from the car as a complete unit.

There can be much said for changing the whole unit in one go because they have both had the same amount of wear. As for getting someone with access to garage ramps to change it, that's got to be better than getting a bad back. As you say, its in a horrible position.

Ok, so..
Got a recon SM from motor parts direct today and fitted this evening,

Tools used.

8mm & 13mm combination spanners.
6mm, 8mm, 10mm & 13mm long reach sockets with t-bar and ratchets.
6mm ball ended allen key.
Various screw drivers.
Torch and mirror.
And an old rag :)

The job,
If like me you have a bad back, things can take time. Some bits of the work where done blind with a lot of feel. I din't need to jack up the car in any way also.

Removed,
Engine top cover
Inlet piping to and from air box,
Air box,
Battery tray,
Fuel filter,
vacuum line, from vac pump to brake servo,

It's not to much of a bad job, I just took my time and actually enjoyed most of it.

Cheers,

Adam.
