Hi!

I was out driving and started to notice a faint "whistling" sound. Suddenly, there is a loss of power and the sound becomes a very high squealing sound instead. It varies in pitch and volume with how much throttle I use. There is a huge loss of power, as I was almost not able to accelerate at all. Could it be the turbo?

Thank.

Hi Vidar.

If you suspect the turbo, just remove the air intake to the turbo inlet to expose the inlet vanes. You can put your finger in there :o (obviously don't have the engine running) and the vanes should spin very freely with a minimum of finger movement.

You can take a photo too so we can see if the vanes are damaged. Just take one like the pictures above.

How to attach photos? this tells you how

Other squealing sounds can be the cam belt tensioner bearing, but this doesn't usually come with a power reduction, but if the cam belt fails it becomes a total power off :o

I was able to get a diagnostic and here are the fault codes:

P0401 egr insufficient flow

P1459 Electric EGR valve position copy signal
Valve stuck open while driving

P0490 Electric EGR valve position copy signal
Valve opening too small.

P0409 is a generic trouble code relating to a problem incurred in the electrical circuit to the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve.
