hi, i have a 54 plate c3 desire, diesel. i put £15 fuel in it yesterday but the fuel light is still on and the gauge is showing only one bar. a work mate who is a mechanic told me this could be due to the cold weather. is this true and will it right itself? if not, what could be causing this and how do i fix it?

Welcome to the forum karen169,

£15 of Diesel is only going to tickle the gauge, as the gauge measures quantity not cost, £15 is only about 10 litres.

Try filling it up and see if the gauge sorts it self out.

Some cars don't register such small inputs of fuel, although the C3 is quite good, I wouldn't be surprised if the fuel gauge sprang into life with a bigger dose of fuel. If the gauge doesn't go to full, with a full tank, you may have a problem with the gauge/sensor, but there is no need to start diagnosing a potentially non existent fault yet.

There was already about £15 in it though. I had only filled it 2 days before and it normally registers as little as a fiver

with the fuel gauge that looks like this, I found that £5 doesn't make any difference at current UK fuel prices, even £10 doesn't move the gauge.

Try more fuel to the full mark as the sensor may be stuck on the low position, then if its still not right, wait till it warms up a bit, then we can move on to investigating and fixing a definite and verifiable actual fault. The (yet to be identified as a fault) fault is probably the level sensor: (number 2)

But, you don't want to get into that, until you are sure its just not a lack of fuel being added. As a side note, the more modern versions of the engine, those with a DPF are expecting a full tank at each refuelling, this helps the computer decide on what action to take with the additive. Although this doesn't apply to your car, its worth remembering for future reference.

The diagram is from the diesel car, your is a petrol.

Do you need to know the diesel or petrol diagram? (This is the diesel questions topic).

No 71 is a screw:

SELF LOCKING SELF-TAP SCREWS DIAM 8X125-25

Squares, Circles and Crosses are fixings of some description.
