My car has been serviced and a new turbo was put in too. when starting the car to warm up - there is excessive black smoke from the exhaust which lasts a little while and then eases up as i drive away. Is there something i can do or put in so it does not smoke so much?

There should be no smoke from the exhaust.

Why did they change the turbo?

Excessive fuelling or not enough air is for black smoke. Faulty injector or not enough air being delivered.
Seeing as you have a new turbo, maybe check the air intake supply is all fitted correctly and confirm the turbo is actually working (waste gate etc).
