Disconnecting the MAF forces the ECU to use its default values. They are not ideal, but perfectly acceptable for normal conditions.If I keep my MAF disconnected - because the car appears to work fine now -

Disconnect MAF won't give as good emissions or performance, but you may not even notice. It depends on your conditions that you drive in.
I don't see any potential problems with disconnecting the MAF, other than those above, but you will want to be looking into getting it fixed, just for the the economy,performance and emissions.
