Hi,I have a 2002 c3 citroen 16v HDI which up till yesterday was running rough but running then it just stopped, turns over but wont start tried it a few times but sounded like one of the belts had gone, checked the auxiliary belt that is fine, then i thought crap has the cambelt gone and i have been turning it over trieing to get it started but there was no noise, engine turning over, sounded different though, question is does anybody think i have damaged engine turning it over, and how do i know if cambelt has gone as i cant see it,will i have to strip it down to find out or is there another way, well thankyou in advance

Hi rob4155, its easy to slacken the top cam belt cover to get a little bit of access to a bit of the cam belt itself for inspection. Just a couple of small bolts to remove to see if its slack. Not so useful if the teeth are missing.rob4155 wrote:Hi,I have a 2002 c3 citroen 16v HDI which up till yesterday was running rough but running then it just stopped, turns over but wont start tried it a few times but sounded like one of the belts had gone, checked the auxiliary belt that is fine, then i thought crap has the cambelt gone and i have been turning it over trieing to get it started but there was no noise, engine turning over, sounded different though, question is does anybody think i have damaged engine turning it over, and how do i know if cambelt has gone as i cant see it,will i have to strip it down to find out or is there another way, well thankyou in advance
But if the teeth have sheared off, you can turn the engine over and observe the cam belt not turning the cam shaft while the crank pulley rotates. The valves will be closed at this point if the belt is damaged so you won't be doing any more damage to the valves that has already been done (potentially).
Its not enough for a full inspection, but OK to see if its broken. The belt should last 150K miles or 10 years.
If you wanted a much better look you will have to remove the engine mount while helping to support the weight of the engine.
as seen in the picture.

if it was running rough and now won't start i'd be doing an injector leak off test.
