2003 Diesel starting problem,

Hi, I have a 2003 citroen c3 1.4 16v Diesel, I'm having an issue with, it will start, I can drive it to say go shopping then once I stop it takes ages to get the thing started again any ideas what could be wrong with it it's now starting to drive me crazy.

When you try to start it after a run,

does it turn turn over slow?

or click click click?

or turns over nice a quick but won't fire up?

When it eventually starts do you get a cloud of smoke from the exhaust?

If so , is it black, white or blue?

Does the dashboard temperature display work correctly?

Hi thanks for the reply, it turns over quick just doesn't start have to keep trying, there is no smoke from the exhaust and the temperature display works fine.

Attached a video it started pretty quick this time but its been stood for 3 hours.

and it does sound very rough, but that may just be the video?


I don't know if the engine management (MIL) fault is linked to the starting problem, but I would be reading the codes to see what the ECU things is wrong. Use lexia tool for this.


The temperature gauge shows cold, was this a warm start?

Does it get a regular fuel filter service, the water drain from it at each oil change?

The 16v has some high tolerance delphi injectors that give trouble if the fuel system is neglected.

You may have excessive leakoff that only shows up when the fuel is hot as its thinner. Excessive leakoff will inhibit starting.

The leak off is a simple test and will give you an idea of the injectors state.

How do I perform a leak off on a 1.4HDi 16v?

Can't miss the engine check light and beeps

Sorry for late reply had trouble logging in.
I had the fuel filter, air filter and oil filter changed as well oil changed, Where the car is parked on my drive there is what looks like oil or diesel on the ground, when you look at the engine where the injectors you see what looks like a little pool of diesel.
