Hi, my engine oil has always read overfull even though when i changed the oil i put the exact 3.8 litre total capacity in, i have just figured out that someone has replaced the dipstick with one from a 1.6 hdi so i was wondering what the correct oil dipstick for my car is and where the best place to get it would be, i read up on this site about there being an extended service engine (i guess this is for company cars?) anyway, my service schedule is every 12500 miles or year whichever comes first so i dont think i have the extended service engine but i dont want to make a mistake and fit another wrong dipstick in my car.
thanks

The extended oil service at 20K miles is the same engine as the 12.5K miles.samstagmoonyham wrote:Hi, my engine oil has always read overfull even though when i changed the oil i put the exact 3.8 litre total capacity in, i have just figured out that someone has replaced the dipstick with one from a 1.6 hdi so i was wondering what the correct oil dipstick for my car is and where the best place to get it would be, i read up on this site about there being an extended service engine (i guess this is for company cars?) anyway, my service schedule is every 12500 miles or year whichever comes first so i dont think i have the extended service engine but i dont want to make a mistake and fit another wrong dipstick in my car.

What is different is the use that the engine goes through.
The 12.5K oil change is for engines that are used as 'severe operating conditions' which is stop-start journeys, city driving at peak times, not getting up to temperature, mostly short runs, taxi service, very hot climates and poor quality fuel as some of the possible reasons for 'severe'.
20K mile service would suit a company car that just goes up and down the motorway.
But doing a more frequent oil change never did any harm and if you flick through the haynes manual, they would want the oil changes done more frequently than the 12.5K miles that Citroen suggest.
I haven't mentioned any of the other service items, but there are many and there is also a 2 year limit on servicing that should be done even if the mileage has not been met.
Anyway, you are doing the right thing by measuring the oil before filling it.
You should have an oil level indicator on the dashboard and you can use that for a correct level. You can also pick up a new dipstick for your C3 by following this link to ebay and select the right one from the list.

and this is a dip stick from the 16v HDI engine you have (for reference)

Hi, thanks for the reply
At the moment i am only doing around 10000 miles or so per year so i just service every year to ensure my oil never degrades and provides insufficient lubrication for the engine, i also change the other service parts including oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, cabin filter and lubricate hinges and locks etc, however i am still concerned about this dipstick thing, is it model number 1174.85? as when i search for the part for specifically my car on ebay i get a multitude of results, i always check the oil on the dashboard every time i start the car but there is something so assuring about checking the old dipstick
