Hi, when removed I'm trying to find the best way to clean the cables if indeed they should be/can be cleaned.
I've heard of various ways; Using white lithium grease, not using grease etc.
The options that come to mind are: white lithium grease, no grease, degreasing solution, wiping down with WD40 or best left alone?
Also checking visually are there any signs the cables are too worn or not?
Any help would be great for best practice, Thanks.

Hi
I don't think you will find wear on the cables but its the drive gear that acts on the cables wears.
If the grease gets very dirty it can cause too much drag on the cables.
So I would say, clean the old, dirty grease off and repelnish with new white lithium for the anti wear properties on the drive gears.
I would imagine every 10 years or so, depending on how much the roof drive gets used, for a re-grease.
No grease would mean the least drag on the cables and more chance of collecting dirt but the most wear on the drive gears.

Thanks for that, it makes sense. When the ratchet sound happens the drive gear is the part that takes the clobbering, quickly!
Just to clarify, would wiping down the cables with Wd40 then a light spray with the lithium grease do the job?
Really thankful for your advice. From what I have recently learnt failing sliders followed by gear drive damage seems to be the major culprits!

I've found the spray on white lithium grease, when on a drive system to disappear quite quickly.
Becuase you want to only do the job once, I would go heavy on the 'spray on' version, or if you can get some that isn't an aerosol like this tube of lithium grease, give it a good coating to make sure it can continue to do it's job for many years to come.
WD40 is good for cleaning off the grease.

Brilliant, trial and error is a dangerous business on these!
Thanks again for your advice.
