Hello,

So following my other thread here and on backroads.ie, I decided to replace 17" alloy rims with 15" steel rims, likely new ones but to exact spec.

WIll I also need new bolts and/or nuts to put steel wheels on? Or is this as simple as taking off the (lock) nuts, taking off the alloy wheel, putting on the steel wheen and putting the nuts back on?

Thanks!

I see a bolt 5605.66 specified for steel wheels on the earlier C3.

Steel wheel bolt looks different, different part number 5405.66
Wheel nut for a Citroen C3 steel wheel
Wheel nut for a Citroen C3 steel wheel

and the bolts for an alloy wheel, used over the years, part number 5405.67
Wheel nut for a citroen C3 alloy wheel
Wheel nut for a citroen C3 alloy wheel
Note the washer fitted on the bolt for alloy wheels.

I think you will need, 16x 5405.66 (actually a febi part 29208 - same thing) because the locking nut is not typically found on steel wheels.

The alloy wheel bolt will work (safely), because they are used as a temporary fix for the space saver spare. You can see a taper and a washer on the alloy wheel bolt.

Citroen C3 wheel bolt explained. Steel or Alloy or space save spare?

The taper fixes the steel and the washer fixes the alloy.

But if you use alloy wheel bolts on steel wheels, it looks odd because they stick out too much and plastic wheel trims may not fit properly because of the protrusion.

You can't use steel wheel bolts on an alloy wheel because you don't have the flat face or washer on a steel wheel bolt.

Thank you very much! This really explains a lot!

Sadly, I already ordered a set of steel wheel bolts, based on two tyre fitters telling me they are quite different, which turned out not to be the case. On the other hand, I'm getting lock bolts removed so I'd have to pay for four anyway... but there goes 23 Euro, on balance. On the third hand that means I can put on hub caps if and when I want to, and if I don't put them on I get the proper steelie look :)
