Having recently taken the plunge and bought another C3, this one is an 57 plate (Nov 07) 1.6 HDI 16v Exclusive with 16,200rm on the clock, I thought that I would get a lot of use as it was low mileage.

However on hearing a front n/s rattle after a few weeks, I took it to my tame citroen specialist, and his diagnosis is that it needs a complete new rack (at £2500 all in - ish)

The noise i heard is due to their being up to 10mm of upward movement (as at full right lock) of the rack itself, not the casting, but the left hand end connected to the track rod via the ball ended link rod. (this is brand new and was fitted in an attempt to fix the rattle)

Does any one know if there is a way to repair the "bushing?" that supports the rack end?

Thanks, h13 drg

Welcome to the forum h13drg

I don't know about parts availability but everything can be repaired, its just not worth the money some of the time. The price you have been quoted is for a new part, but its not a new car any more, so I would consider used parts to replace the faulty rack.

There are a fair few on ebay, see steering racks for a Citroen C3 (here)

This one on eBay could be worth a punt?

Does the bit you need to repair your rack appear in the picture?

I don't know if you can get the bit you need, but the problem is that just changing that bit may not be enough. With all that movement you may find other bits are worn, the opposite end for example. But you are not going to know how much is worn until it fails later (or sooner). Its not normal for the rack end bush to wear like that, so I would guess the are some other factor, yet unidentified, that has caused the excessive wear.

If you wanted to find the rack end bushes, try a company that refurbishes steering racks? They may be able to help.

Where did the price of £2500 for a steering rack come from? Unless this was a typo, it ought to be more like £250. A friend just changed one on a Skoda (similar electric type) and it was under £500 for the job including labour and using OEM parts.
If at first you don't succeed, destroy all the evidence and pretend you never tried :lol:

Thanks for the replies guys,

Most of the suggestions have already been looked at, But, Missing Linc, i can assure you that the correct OE replacement, (1 of 3 rack variants) from Citroen, comes in complete at £1710 plus change, then there is remove and refit the new one, (exhaust and subframe drop to do this) and then the rack/rack ecu initialisation, and then the physical steering-to-rack geometry set up to apply (with special tools etc) This tops out at a cool 2 and a half g's!

Thanks again.

PS, I do have a warranty claim pending, so watch this space! Plus I have been warned off 'remade' on quality grounds.

C3 Driver & C3 car;
Re the diagram, the part is not shown, but if you follow the dotted line from "E" you can see the moving rack "sticking out". (There is no suppression of the upward movement that exists on my rack) Obviously there is a "part" missing/displaced/broken somewhere? My problem is no information re the rack end supporting bushing etc?
