Would it be possible to just replace the torque transducer and leave the rack in place? Not possible Im afraid. Re-aligning the steering wheel and road wheels would be a pain, but less painful?
Does the input shaft to the rack/transducer go through the firewall? Or does the lower part of the steering column go through the fire wall? Not sure Im afraid. I think all the sensors are in the transducer casing.
So you lifted the steering column off the steering rack input shaft before removing the rack( you said "lift off joint")? Yes Did that require removing any bolts/supports to the column? Only the universal joint pinch bolt needs removed to disengauge the universal joint and attached steering column from the rack input shaft. column is on a telescopic extension that you can push up and pull down on to the ipnut shaft.
I hope it works. I got it back on the road today and its perfect , working as it should Im relieved to say.
staionary power steering is turning to Off side, no power steering when turning near side

Thanks for that.
I have seen this fault on the forum before but no one had reported a solution.
I have a C3 that I am currently stripping for parts and the steering rack was one thing I was looking at removing.
