The rear wash/wipe keeps working intermittently on it's own without being switched on. It can happen at any time. It does not appear to be related to the use of any switch or control.

Any help would be appreciated.

This could be cause by a faulty switch on the stalk, they are known for getting bad and causing faults. You can often find a used replacement on ebay (here) that matches your suspect one. But other than that you would need to diagnose by testing with the lexia clone tool from ebay to break down the fault to BSI, COM2000 or the wiring to the wiper motor.
