This is a 2011 C3 picasso with the integral steering ECU and motor as a single unit.

I can, with some difficulty loosen the two torx headed mounting screws but how does one then lift the unit out. It looks like there is no way past the rack, ARB and subframe. Steering motor faults are apparently common on 2011 cars so someone will have done this. How does one get it out, please?

Well since no help offered I persisted anyway. So this may help someone in the future attempting this job.

It was hard getting the top one if the two torx socket set screws (bolts) which fix it in place. Finger tip job working blind at full arms length. I used 3/8 drive socket set with extensions and a knuckle joint. Slow work.

However the unit was then trapped in the cavity above subframe, ARB, steering rack and exhaust. This was much harder! I tried all routes out but it just wouldn't quite clear any. Finally the solution was to first remove the exhaust heat shield, then disconnect one end of the 2 ARB drop links. The ARB then rotates enough to give that extra 30mm needed to wiggle the PAS motor out past the ARB and down via the exhaust 'tunnel'.I

This particular year/ model of the C3 has the electronics module integral with the motor. This makes it bulkier and probably a lot harder to extract than those with the ECU module up next to the battery.

I suspect a garage do this by disconnecting the subframe and lifting the body up clear to give access. Not such a bad job if you have a post lift, but not practical for working DIY home!
