Hi

Which gearbox do you have?
I don't know the precise variant, but it's a 5-speed manual.
Unable to locate drain and/or fill plugs by crawling round under the car, I undertook a lengthy search on the net and found several references to a breather plug under the fuel filter/battery tray area. Some said remove all the air intake pipework and the fuel filter, some said remove the battery and tray. I went for the latter. I found a black plastic plug with a 17mm hexagon right on top of the gearbox casing. TBH after getting the battery and tray out of the way, it's fairly easy to access. Removing the air inlet pipework and the fuel filter instead of the battery might not have made the breather quite as accessible.

I hope this post might help someone else. :D

I would be helpful to know which manual gearbox you have when refilling through the breather hole.

When there is a classic filling point, the fill point also acts as a level sensor. Keep filling until it won't fill any more and that is the correct level. This method is good for topping-up the gearbox oil and it is impossible to overfill and difficult to underfill.

With the breather vent method you need to fully drain down and just refill with the correct amount of oil. You can't use this method for topping up because you don't know how much to top-up with and can easily overfill and underfill.

The solution would mean a full drain down and refill, even if just a top-up was required.

It may be possible to work out the gearbox from the VIN.
