Do you have an anftermarket stereo fitted or do you have the standard radio?
A misconfigured aftermarket can affect the remote unlocking
You can (should be able to) unlock the drivers door with the key, and put the key in the ignition to accessories/ignition to silence the alarm (if fitted).

I have the factory fitted radio so no modifications etc. The fob has worked for years. I started getting messages about the plip battery being low a few days ago and then it suddenly stopped working - hence the change of battery. I've tried a couple new batteries and made sure they've been fitted the correct way round.
My worry is that I won't be able to silence the alarm if it's set off. I guess the only way is to try

Thanks again.

I am sure if you can get the ignition 'on', you can silence the alarm.
I've had to do this myself over the years and I can unlock manually, open the door, put the key in the ignition and turn it before anyone has time to twitch their curtains back

The biggest problem you will have if the remote locking doesn't work is that you will not be able to lock the car fully.
The manual lock in the drivers door is only for 'emergency' unlocking. It won't lock or unlock the rest of the doors.
If you are getting a plip battery low message, I would go and buy a brand new, top quality branded battery for it before getting bogged down in anything expensive.

If so, it's the button on the PCB of the fob.
Do the indicators flash when you press both the lock and unlock buttons (not at the same time, one after the other)?
If so then it's a relay in the BSI.
Get in the car (as Arfur says) and press the central locking button on the dash. Do the doors lock and unlock as usual?
If so, it's the button on the PCB. If not, again, probably a relay in the BSI.
Removing the stock radio can stuff up the remote locking but I don't know if it stops working out right or only partially works. I think that with the stock radio removed, the central locking button on the dash still works.
Sounds like it's not a radio issue if this just happened out of the blue?
If the person who likes Mile Oldfield can get back to us and tell us the answers to the above questions, that would be good.

The car can be secured if the remote or the power is lost.
All the passenger doors have paper stickers over the emergency locking selectors, adjacent to the door catches IN the door.
Remove the sticker and insert the key blade (or screw driver) into the selector and turn it. Then close the door. It can be opened from the inside as normal.
You cant lock the drivers door if you don't have the key.
The rear hatch requires power to be opened. Remove the fuse to "lock" it. Put the fuse back in to open it. If you have lost power, the hatch can be opened from the inside by inserting a very small probe or screw driver into the small hole in the base of the door catch and twist it side ways.
I'm sure that there is a post on here covering all that.
