Hi. I have play in the right-hand inner tie rod ball joint, and have purchased replacements (I intend to do both sides). What is the best way to remove the old one when I do not have the special tool that I have seen used?

I have seen videos where people use a pipe wrench to grip the old rod, but as there is no space to get in to do this, is it better to remove the lower control arm first to get access?

I am a competent home mechanic and have the skills and most tools to do the job.

Any advice here would be gratefully received.

Many thanks.

Access is poor, the special tool (ebay) is cheap (enough to only use it once), which for the money may only be up to a couple of uses.

The lower control arm bolts can be almost impossible to remove.
