gears not selecting when the engine is running

Hi, i've just bought a citroen c3 1.4 petrol on 04 plate. Started driving it home and the gears started acting up not selecting correctly and then not at all. I turned the the engine off and i could select all the gears but not if the engines running, can anybody help please-Jay

My first thought would be the hydraulics of the clutch mechanism not working.
Air in the hydraulics, no hydraulic fluid in the clutch slave cylinder, slave cylinder failure, could cause that.
If the clutch does not disengage, then you can't easily select a gear. Its a hydraulic clutch.
Well worth checking.
The clutch and brakes use the same fluid (this DOT 4 Synthetic Brake Fluid (available here) and both share the same reservoir (the MIN/MAX container).
The slave cylinder is available here at ECP and is not difficult to replace.

I totally agree with that, if there is a hydraulic problem there will be very little or no resistance on the clutch pedal, failing that the clutch bearing has collapsed therefore not allowing the clutch to disengage, unfortunately the gearbox needs removing to investigate further, hope this helps,
