Hello There,

New to forum having just bought a C3 1.4 LX petrol 2002 for my Wife. Nice clean car but without good history.

Can anyone advise what the top hose coming from the expansion tank is for and where the other end terminates please? I want to do a coolant change but need this part first - is there an online option or dealer only for these sorts of things?

I am just starting to go through the car to establish a level where I know everything service requirement out has been done but as yet do not have a Haynes manual to help.

Thanks in advance.

have a look at the Citroen C3 Coolant tips page with information about how to refill and what to refill with.

I think you are describing the bleed hose, its a Citroen only part and very uncommon to change.

Some more pictures in this topic - How do you remove the coolant bottle?

Thanks for the replies.

As its a bleed pipe does that mean that the other end has some type of one way valve? Is there any harm in running without one? The car runs fine and gets up to 3 bars on the gauge and does not appear to overheat when standing running for a while. I will of course consult the posts as regards the coolant change but do you think I could do the coolant change without the pipe or should I get one at my soonest opportunity?

Thanks again to all those who replied, your advice is most appreciated by this C3 newby!

Cheers

Hello dazbaby

Not all models have them fitted. Diesels generally do, petrols generally don't.

If you remove the pipe the system won't pressurise and you will also lose coolant.

Are you saying yours is missing? or damaged?

You don't see them damaged really, so you will need to find out what damaged it (refitted incorrectly?)

Ours is a petrol and as there is a take-off from the expansion bottle I assumed that the bleed pipe was missing thinking all models would normally have it fitted. I was not aware that some models may not have the pipe at all but there again I an totally unfamiliar with the car. As the car is new to us I can't tell you whether it was damaged previously as the previous lady owner entrusted the repair work etc. to a local back street garage and would not know either way.
Cheers

When you drain down the system you can check if the take-off from the expansion bottle is blanked off internally to put your mind at rest.

The system wouldn't get to pressure if the pipe was missing and it needed to be there, you would also lose all of your coolant quite quickly.
