Excuse my poor explanation or missing important info, first car and very inexperienced in all areas car related!
Had my 04 1.4 SX auto 6 weeks, it handles the a1 well every morning, now it's suddenly developed a rattle/clanging when the car is idle. It's Less when handbrake is on and the car is put into park, and even less noticeable than that when at speed. Hunting out the soind it's defiantly at back/right of the car next to the exhaust (can hear it in the boot above the exhaust worst!). Any ideas/tips what might cause a noisy idle exhaust, and the cost any possible fix might be? I want to arm myself with knowledge before heading to a garage! Cheers folks, Jay.

Hello there it would be handy to know if your exhaust has the strap bracket for the rear section of the exhaust or the mounts are welded directly to the back box as its either the baffles inside the back box or the strap bracket or even possibly the heat shield that may of come loose. best bet stick ya head under and grab the (cold) tail pipe and give it a shake. as far as cost that always depends what it is if strap bracket a couple of quid and a easy fix for ya self if it the baffles then your looking at £40ish for a new back box easily done by your self but will require cutting of the exhaust if is the factory fitted exhaust. and if its the heat shield happen a couple of quid.

Now if its not a rattle and its more of a dull thud which my wife had on her 1.4 diesel it was the exhaust mounts that were worn and knocking against rear wheel arch liner and the rear mounts are £6 and £7 there are 2 on the rear box.

The rear strap and box is known to rust

The topic to fix the strap is here https://citroenc3owners.com/diesel-c3-ti ... -t576.html

This is what a rusted one looks like

Do you know if the rusted exhaust bracket could cause a overheating like smell? I've been driving on it today and when the rattle is at it's worst there's a heat like smell coming off the car!?

Tried giving the pipe a wiggle to see if it's loose but theres only a little movement, read that the smell and noise could be cat converter problems. Dreading already how much this will sting come pay day

I don't know what an overheating like smell is.

Bad cats can smell like rotten eggs. Faulty exhaust mounts can heat up plastics underseal making a burnt plastic or burning rubber type of smell.

Have a look under the car to see if the bracket is rusted out or the rubber mounts are damaged, missing or not attached correctly.
