For about 3 months now the ASR LIGHT (CAR WITH WAVEY LINES ORANGE IN CIRCLE) and the handbrake light have come on on start up , gradually got worse and went from sometimes to everytime I started the car when the start up checks ran. Doesnt seem to affect driving,.
Yesterday I had some work done which involved the car being jacked up , first the one side then the next (unrelated)
when I left the garage the warning lights didnt come back on until about 5 miles into the journey , same again today nothing and then for no specific reason
it comes back on.
I am aware of other posts related to this , however can I dismiss any possible causes due to the fact that it doesnt come on on the initial ignition check ?
I have read that it coming on when the initial ignition check runs indicates a
sensor problem , however can I now rule this out?
Im not really asking for advice about what the cause is , im really asking due to this development what I can rule out.
Thanks in advance.
ESP/ASR and handbrake brake light on, intermittently

Hi
It could well be the ABS wheel sensors giving a bad signal to the ABS/ESR system.
It doesn't affect the driving, but it will affect the operation (or no operation) of ABS or ESR should you need it.
There are probably P0500 codes stored. Checking for this code would be your proof, but removing the rear wheels and cleaning off the ABS inductor ring and the sensor itself could easily be the cure for this.

The reason that P0500 error is not detected at ignition on is because there is not anything wrong with the sensor. It is usually the signal from the inductor ring being incorrect. This is caused by contamination.
The signals are not sent until the wheel actually turns.
It's not as if the signal is missing, which could be detected very quickly.
You will find it to be more of a poorly shaped signal that is sometime in and sometimes out of the acceptable limits, or useful limits. This is why you only get the fault detected intermittently.

ill do that thanks , Ive already removed and cleaned the front sensors with no change. it doesnt look as if rear sensors can be removed just cleaned?
ill have a look and let you know , thanks for advice,.

The front sensor induction rings have a different system that are less prone to a build up of contaminants. The fronts are in the wheel bearing.Neilcmusic1 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 6:31 pm ill do that thanks , Ive already removed and cleaned the front sensors with no change. it doesnt look as if rear sensors can be removed just cleaned?

The rears are often overlooked and eventually pick up a lot of ferrous material that attaches to the magnets - as seen in the photo.
