any advice on re-attaching the back door handle (Outside). Nothing looks broken on the door handle, it just looks like there is the possibility that something had come off and fallen inside the door itself.

My front door handle came off last week, but they are the same on all doors. the problem was that the thing the handle actuates had come loose as the pivot pin had worked its way out, I managed to punch it back in and now it works fine for another 10 years. You do need to remove the door panel and tear a hole in the draught excluder to get access.
