I destroyed my COM2000 trying to retrofit cruise control.
(I forced the pod in, unfortunately there was not a connector on the PCB, but there was an integrated circuit and a capacitor in the way and I tore these off the PCB).
The symptoms are:
- cranks but does not start
- parking lights permanently on
- does not react to changing the controls on COM2000
* lights stay in 'parking' no mater how the switch is set
* indicators do not work
* wipers and washer do not work

I got a new COM2000 which came from a 06 car.

The symptoms remain the same in all the case:
- no COM2000 connected
- the original COM2000 (with the components soldered back) connected
- the new COM2000 connected

Now I am not sure if I should look for a prefacelift COM2000, or if something further down the wires (ECU) could be damaged too?

No.

Your car's COM's unit communicates with the BSI via a VAN (Vehicle Area network) bus. An '06 car uses a CAN (Controller Area Network) BUS. They are not interchangeable.

The components you damaged probably had something the do with the communications BUS or a power supply.

You need to get a COM's unit from a 2003 or 2004 car. The easy way to tell the difference is to look at wires coming out to the airbag connectors. Yours will have individual wires. Later units have a ribbon cable. You DON'T want the ribbon cable, you want individual wires.

The "pod" style cruise controls don't work on the VAN BUS COM's units (even though they fit). You need to get the "flappy paddle" COM's unit and the steering wheel with integral cruise controls.

I have a sort-of blog thing over in the club area. I tried and failed to get the pod style cruise control to work on a VAN BUS COM's unit. >click here< and scroll down.

Wow thank you for the great answer!
Your thread is awesome!

I am a bit confused about the CC types...
I think I know the pod and the integrated now, but which is the flappy paddle?

Mine original is a 96 474 013 XT, and looks like 96 474 008 XT (individual wires)
The new 2006 is a 96 608 847 XT and looks like 96 605 658 XT (ribbon cable)

There is a 2005 96 576 788 XT with individual wires and the 3 wire connector mentioned in How to install cruise control in a MK1.
If I am correct, it has the blue ESP connector, which my car does not have.
Do you think it would work?
From your description and from the howto I think it could, but I am unsure if the presence of the ESP would cause issues, and also the part number being closer to the CAN COM2000s than to mine.

There are lots of different combinations of the COM's units. Sorry if I confused you.
The "flappy paddle" versions are used on the sensodrive cars. They are the only ones that I know of that are guaranteed to have the 3 pin connector for the cruise control. But as you have discovered, there are other versions. Yes that one will work.
The ESP should be an independent system and shouldn't do anything if it's not plugged in.
The VAN BUS COM's and the CAN BUS COM's look very similar but the internals are very different!! The VAN BUS cars were built up until about the middle of 2005.
VAN BUS is a communication protocol developed by Peugeot/Citroen. But in mid 2005 they abandoned it for the more popular Bosch developed CAN protocol. At the same time they decided to do a "facelift" on the interior and some exterior bits. So it's easy to tell the VAN BUS cars from the CAN BUS cars.

Perfect, I ordered that one.

Oh I see it is shifting paddles, I somehow thought it was another way of controlling the CC lol.
