Different size tyres..

Hi all!
I'm a newbie here and to driving, only past my test a few weeks ago.. Have bought a 2007 pluriel and discovered yesterday when i went to put air in the tyres that the front wheels are 195/60/r15s but the back ones are 185/65 /r15s.

My question is, is this legal??? Or even safe??

I've spoken to a few people i work with today and have tried to find my answers on Google to no avail as I've had contradicting opinions from the people I've asked. One person has said it's completely illegal but nobody else really seems to know and I'm now worrying about it.

I would be worried that something serious had happened to the pluriel because it is very uncommon to find a mix of tyres like that. It sounds like the front of one car and the back of another

There is a lot more to tyre safety than just the size, so it is impossible to say they are safe.

When you come to change tyres as they wear, try to get sizes that match the label in the door shut (assuming you have the right wheels on there).

The C3 Pluriel originally had 185/65 R15, so these are what you should have. I don't think you will have any problems but it's not best practice to mix tyres like yours has.

Yes, the diagram in the door states 185s so I'm going to get them changed to all brand new ones as soon as i can. Just wanted to check on the legalities really.

Just a little follow up on the legality issue. The most common mistake I've come across with switching tyre sizes is changing the diameter of the tyres. Apart from handling issues, the other pitfall is that the speedometer reads incorrectly, for a larger diameter the speed reading will be too low. In your case, whoever made the change did it well in that the overall diameter is virtually the same, I think it's about 1% difference on circumference, therefore the same error (1%) on speed calibration. Don't take my figures as Gospel, I looked them up on a tyre comparison website.

The main legality for you I would suggest is that you have a car which has been modified from the manufacturers specification. This is something insurance companies are very keen to know about, and can invalidate your policy in the event of a claim. Whether or not it's worth telling your insurers I don't know, or perhaps just get the correct size tyres as soon as you can like you already said.

I changed the tyres last week, i didn't dare let it go through the mot without having the right tyres on, thank you for your replies, much appreciated guys!
