I've finally replaced the passenger coil spring , it's was a nightmare , I'm never doing it again , I had all the correct tools and looked it all up , however if it could have gone wrong it did . Moving on .... I had to jack up passenger side overnight , when I returned there was either a small puddle of break fluid or oil ( Oil I think ) under the wing on the ground , when I monouvered the rotor back into place in order to put the strut back in oil started running from lower centre of engine , a lot of oil . This the stopped for some reason , it's all back together now , brake fluid and oil topped up , however the car is now in a new position and hasn't lost any fluid or left a drip patch , any ideas re this ? , Nothing seems damaged or seperated and as I say it seems to have stopped leaking, thanks in advance

I would say it's gearbox oil.

Brake fluid is "watery" in consistency and feels feels "dry" when you rub it between your fingers. Engine oil is thin, 5-10 weight. Gearbox oil is thick, 80-90 weight. Was the oil that leaked reasonably thick?

If you pulled the drive shafts out of position at all, the gearbox-to-drive shaft seal will leak. At least in a manual gearbox. The AL4 auto has self sealing...er...seals.

How much do you think leaked out? The reason why I asked is topping it up is painful. Not difficult but not easy. If it's not that much I would be tempted to leave it.

There should be a bung on the top of the gearbox under the air filter box and a level bung on the passenger side, rear of the driveshaft at the back of the diff housing on the gearbox. The idea is you fill through the top of the box until oil dribbles out of the level hole.

If your brake fluid level is low, then this indicates your brake pads are worn.

There is no pad wear sensor, but rather the fluid level is your indicator.

Don't top up the level because this messes up that system and when you wind the calipers back to accommodate new pads and discs there is too much brake fluid in the resivoir.

Having removed the strut and springs on my car a couple of times I would definitely say that the drive shaft came partly out of the transmission when you changed your spring and this was your oil leak. This is what normally happens in the bun fight to get it all back together and has also happened to me.
Your Gearbox/Transmission oil level is now low and definitely needs to be topped up/refilled as needed. You are storing up portential trouble if you don't check and refill this. Gearboxes/differentials don't like being run low on oil!
