Sounds like something inside the door is broken or disconnected.

An auto locksmith should get you unlocked, I've seen them do amazing things with their specialist kit.

Interesting that the radio comes on with the key fob. That indicates that the keyfob and receiver are both working as the cars internal control system is waking up.

I have to admit, I'm guilty of not checking and maintaining door looks on our vehicles. You get so used to using the keyfob, it's not until it fails to open the car and you try the manual lock that you realise how important it is to have it working.
If at first you don't succeed, destroy all the evidence and pretend you never tried

Just an update:
3rd garage came round.
Garage 1 had damaged the right hand passenger door handle trying to get in, it now comes off in your hand, so he suggested breaking the window there to get in.
(Garage 2 wouldn't touch it.)
He is sure that somehow the stereo is overriding the command to unlock the door. Not sure why it wont open manually though.
He is going to do the break after he has sourced a replacement window, or full door from the breakers.
We also called a locksmith who quoted £75 and said he would get in through the boot.
AA and RAC said they could not help.
Garage 3 is looking the best so far.
Fingers crossed this saga will soon be over.

Concluded. 1 day short of 2 weeks.
The mechanic smashed the window on the right passenger side, the same door that the other garage had pulled the handle off of. He then had a replacement door to fit straight away. He switched the radio wires and also found a broken solenoid. All fixed now.
Never had such a difficult problem with a car.
